Base oil
Base oils possess specific properties that determine their performance under various lubrication conditions. These properties include thermal and chemical stability to withstand high heat and pressure, the ability to absorb and disperse additives for producing different types of oils, and oxidation resistance for long-term use. Additionally, their insolubility in water and ability to retain properties at low temperatures ensure effective performance in humid and cold conditions.
Group 1
They are classified as oils with less than 90% saturates, more than 0.03% sulfur, and a viscosity index range of 80 to 120. This oil is derived from crude oil
Group 2
They are defined with over 90% saturation, less than 0.03% sulfur, and a viscosity index ranging from 80 to 120. They are often produced through hydrocracking, which is a more complex process compared to Group I base oils.
Group 3
They are more than 90% saturated, contain less than 0.03% sulfur, and have a viscosity index above 120. This longer process is designed to achieve a purer base oil. More pressure and heat are applied during the refinery process.
Group 4
Group 4 base oils are polyalphaolefins (PAOs), which are the same primary synthetic base oils used in industrial and automotive oils
Group 5
Group 5 base oils are classified as all other base oils, including silicone, phosphate esters, polyalkylene glycol (PAG), polyesters, biolubes, and others. Oils in this group can be used at higher temperatures
